Grandcentral - Now Google Voice
Google is ready to fully launch Grand Central/Google Voice. GrandCentral, a phone management service that first launched in 2006 and was acquired by Google for $50+ million in 2007. The app lets users make international phone calls on the cheap and offers a text-to-speech feature for voice mail.
One of the core advantages of this service is that your Google Voice phone number can act as your master phone number - allowing you to program it on the fly to forward calls to whatever existing phone numbers you have.
The service was free and is still going to be free. Users can purchase credit (much like Skype) to make international calls at rates far below what they normally pay. GrandCentral will also remain solely a U.S. service.
The automated transcripts are definitely one of the most interesting features; Google has invested a lot in voice-to-text and text-to-voice conversions lately, and this feature will probably be reliable enough for most users. If you like, you can set Google Voice to email or SMS you the transcriptions.
